Night Fly MOVIES!!! -- July 2010

OK, as promised, here are a few video clips from the night fly. These are all AVI movie files, I'd recommend downloading them and playing them on your PC using Windows Media Player, or Quicktime Player.

I'm doing some night planes now, and would love to know how AaronG did
those sequenced lights on his slow stick. He could turn it on and
off, so must have had it on a switch or something. But watching the
lights strobe in sequence is something I'd love to do on one of my
planes.

Please share what electronics you used, and where to get them! I
gotta try that!

Well, you could geek out like Aaron and build your own, or go buy a
ready-built starter kit with software to program your sequences here:

As Matt said, there are numerous commercial options for light controls.
If you don't find exactly what you want among those options (I didn't),
then you can let me know what you've got in mind and we can probably
work something out to get you setup with a custom system.

Tom - Let look into the club ordering some of these circuit boards for night
flyers or just for us that want the pretty lights.

I think there is a demand for your circuit board, everyone is talking about
it, I for one am interested in buying one. Why aren't you already mass
producing and selling the thing on your website. If the custom circuit board
that you designed can be bulk produced inexpensively then I would say lets
get about 30 or more made and sell them at the club meeting. Obviously the
Club meeting where we ordered lights and did a build night was a huge
success and twice now we have had a Night Fun-fly that had a big turn out. I
think they will sell like hot cakes. We actually ran out of lights at the
club meeting, about a 15-20 people requested lights then at the club meeting
about 30 people wanted the lights. There is definitely a demand for lights
and night flying, if you build it they will buy it. If it is a matter of
up-front costs, lets ask the club to buy them then the club can get
reimbursed when they are sold at the next meeting.

Aaron - I am sure they will also see like hot cakes if you post them on
rcgroups.com. Hint Hint.

Yep, I agree with Mike. I'm down for two or three if the price is
decent. As long as they run off 12 volts instead of 6 volts like
those ones from Dimension Engineering. I looked into those, but
they're designed to run off your receiver pack, and the HobbyKing
lights we've all been using run off a 12V power supply, which is
double that.

I'm sure the guys down here in Utah Valley will likely want them too,
probably 6 or 7 more you could sell to our group.

I could come up and help make them if you need manpower. I'm a quick
learner, and it sounds like a fun project.

Okay guys, let me do some research to come up with a price. It would be
helpful if I had an idea of the local demand. Sounds like between 5 &10 for
the Utah county crowd, how many for the SLC group?

Night Fly MOVIES!!! -- July 2010

Aaron,

If the price is $50 or less, I'm down for one to try. If it's over $50, I
have to discuss with my wife exactly how much over $50 it is :)

Night Flyer LED Controller

I'm in the process of getting some of these LED controllers fabricated. I've got a basic website up at the moment at www.Wasatch-RC.com. The functionality of the controllers I'm selling is essentially the same as what I used at last year's night fly event, except that I've programmed in 16 different blinking modes instead of just 4 like I had then. There are 4 blinking channels and 1 dimming channel, and each channel can support 1 Amp (5 Amps total for the board). I'm not sure on the price yet, it will depend partially on the amount of interest there is. If it looks like 100 or more of the controllers will sell reasonably quickly, then the price will probably start at $50 and drop from there as volumes increase. If anyone is interested in purchasing one, please let me know so I can start getting an idea of what the price needs to be.

I will be at the swap meet in Ogden next weekend selling a small quantity of my early units with the updated firmware at a discounted price of about $35.

Thanks,
