NURCAC: Pylon Race

Aug 8 2009 7:00 am

The Northern Utah Radio Controlled Aircraft Club (NURCAC) has a tradition of hosting Quickie 500 pylon races each summer. These are fun-fly style and are not sanctioned events, but pre-registration is required in order to fill out the matrix for who is racing whom. Usual participation is 8-12 flyers. Come join the fun with your Q500 airframe and .40-sized sport motor!

More information about Quickie 500 racing is available at http://www.rcpro.org/html/ama_racing/quickie_500/rules.htm .

Important rules:
* There's a safety and airframe check for the race.
* Engines are any .40-sized, sub-$100 motor currently for sale. Engine must not be modified (and this means leave the baffle in the muffler, too).
* Wheels must be stock size; don't make them too small.
* Fuselage must meet certain minimum dimensions. It's best to pick up a Q500 kit rather than guess.
* No fillets and no composite construction; we're looking at lowest-common-denominator racing here, not high-end high-dollar battles.
* 9x6 APC prop

Typical cost to put a Q500 racer in the air:
* $100 kit
* $85 motor (Thunder Tiger Pro .40 bb is very popular for its power with a 9x6 prop)
* $50 receiver
* $15 servos x 4
* $20 receiver battery

All-up cost to put a Q500 in the air: around $300. That's part of the point of this kind of racing: it's relatively cheap!
